3 Tips Organizing your Classroom and Materials

Congratulations! Having a new classroom can be an amazing opportunity for all teachers, new and experienced. Now let’s get you started off on the right foot using these tips for organizing your classroom and materials.

1. Plan your Designated Spaces

When you first arrive in your new classroom, take a few moments to absorb all the newness and enjoy. It’s not everyday you get a new space that you will be changing lives in. As you take it all in, envision what you see happening in your classroom. Then think about designated spaces. In the primary grades you often are responsible for teaching a multitude of different subjects. To make your life easier, I encourage you to store materials for one subject all in one area. By organizing based on subject, you will have an easier time finding materials throughout the year, which can save you precious time.

2. Containers are Magic

As you begin to your materials and supplies away, take the time and spend the money to by bins, baskets, buckets, and all of the other organizational items you may need. This tip is crucial for organizing your classroom and materials. If you are just starting off your dollar store will be your best friend. I remember buying bins for my classroom that I have used for years. They may not always be the sturdiest, but they will do the trick. I use mine for my library of books, to hold construction paper, organize my writing centers, and more! If you are strapped for cash, you can use Ziploc bags or even cardboard boxes from your snacks.

3. Think about Accessibility

Depending on the age of your students will greatly determine how you place materials around your classroom. In the primary grades, you have to put yourself in their shoes. Anything you want the kids to be able to use on their own needs to be at their height. Keep items for centers, library books, and extra supplies at a lower level, which will help your students to be more self sufficient.
